I'm Linda Smillie, an Accredited Practising Dietitian based in Canberra ACT.
I have a special interest in plant based diets (vegan and vegetarian) and the nutritional management of gastrointestinal disorders.
I became a dietitian because I love food and health and I love helping and talking to people. I still get immense pleasure from meeting clients in my private practice and helping them achieve their health goals. I love the challenge of keeping up-to-date with current nutritional research and translating this information into practical recommendations for my clients.
As an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD), I am a fully qualified, university-trained, food and nutrition expert. With 25 years experience changing people’s lives through better nutrition I will help you improve your diet whether you have a specific health goal in mind or you just want to improve your general health and nutrition. As an APD, I undergo ongoing learning and professional development and must abide by a strict code of ethics.
I am currently working towards my PhD at the university of Canberra. I am researching plant based diets.
I have worked in a gastroenterology clinic for the last 5 years where I help clients with the nutritional management of a variety of gut disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease and Coeliac Disease). I also accept general referrals including assisting clients with a range of chronic health conditions including diabetes and heart disease.
Like most of us, I grew up eating a traditional "meat and 3 veg" diet. I was conditioned to accept that meat eating was OK and I did not question where my food came from.
When I studied nutrition at university over 25 years ago I was taught that vegetarian and vegan diets were very risky. So despite toying with vegetarian diets as a university student I slipped back into eating meat and dairy and thought I was consuming a very healthful diet.
However we now know that well planned plant based diets not only meet all of our nutrient requirements but can reduce our risk of many lifestyle diseases. Some of the world's longest lived and healthiest people consume a diet mostly or completely comprised of plants. In recent years I have educated myself about modern animal agricultural practices and the effect my food choices were having on the environment, animals and fellow humans.
So it was a "no-brainer" for me in the end. I follow a plant based diet because it is good for my health, the environment and animals and thus aligns with my desire to live as compassionate a life as possible.
